RAF Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with French aircraft in a combined operation targeting an underground arms cache in Syria operated by the IS group, according to the British defence ministry.

The location, located using surveillance, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was located in hills just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a several approach shafts leading to the depot... preliminary assessments indicate the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the operation late on Saturday and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - also known as the so-called Islamic State - enforced militant control over significant areas in Iraq and Syria prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation shows British leadership, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to eliminate any revival of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," the British Defence Secretary the minister stated.

British military aircraft have performed overwatch operations over Syria to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of Islamic State after its routing at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the authorities noted.

"I extend gratitude to every member of British forces who took part in this operation for their professionalism and their bravery," Healey added. "They were among a great many UK service members deployed over the festive period. This mission, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who endanger our security, highlights how British military are prepared to act, all year round, protecting the UK domestically and strong abroad."

During December, the United States armed forces conducted what it called a "massive strike" against IS targets in Syria, following an ambush killed two American soldiers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. estimates Islamic State still boasts roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in both countries.
