Meteorological devices containing thousands of packs of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was required to halt operations for hours when multiple of them entered the airspace of Lithuania.
Air Travel Interruptions
The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations affecting six thousand travelers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Border security stated that 25 meteorological balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the airport's airspace.
As many as 14 of the atmospheric instruments deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and adjacent to the frontier with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
A minimum of 11 balloons transporting eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why smugglers utilize a approach that remains highly susceptible to weather factors rather than easier to manage drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible volumes of smuggled items and to apprehend coordinators and perpetrators so that these practices become unprofitable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Similar occurrences in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to fast-track conversations about improving airspace protection throughout the continent.
